The mountaintop fortress of Masada overlooking the Dead Sea is famous in Jewish history as the final holdout for about 900 rebels who chose suicide over capture by the Romans in A.D. 73.

Jewish heritage is an integral part of European and Global history and culture. Much of it is rooted in Europe, with a story of migrations, persecutions and precariousness; but also of exchanges, humanism and a profusion of mutual enrichment.

The archaeology of Israel is the study of the archaeology of Israel, stretching from prehistory through three millennia of documented history. The ancient Land of Israel was a geographical bridge between the political and cultural centers of Mesopotamia and Egypt. Despite the importance of the country to three major religions, serious archaeological research only began in the 15th century.

The European & Global Jewish heritage mainly includes:

archaeological sites, old synagogues and cemeteries, ritual baths, Jewish quarters, monuments and memorials,

archives and libraries,

specialised museums to study, to protect and to publicise Jewish life and its religious and daily artefacts.

The main goals of the European Route of Jewish Heritage are to preserve, to promote and to keep alive Jewish heritage, to develop tourism around these sites and to make Europeans aware of the cultural richness brought by the Jews to Europe.

The European Day of Jewish Culture and the European and Global Route of Jewish Heritage have been promoted by an alliance of several Jewish and non-Jewish organisations, including tourist agencies as well as volunteer organisations. The AEPJ Association, is formed by 2 organisations, B’nai B’rith Europe (BBE) and the Red de Juderias de España (Network of Spanish Jewish Quarters).
